I sent my oldest son off to summer camp this year for the first time and he really loved it. This summer camp was in a wooded place and focused a great deal on outdoor skills but they also focused a great deal on leadership along with teamwork. At this summer camp they did a lot of team building activities for kids to educate them about teamwork, conflict resolution, self esteem, leadership skills etc.
One of the activities they participated in was referred to as the human web. This game is designed to help the children learn communication skills. The way this game is played is that the children stand in a circle and stretch out their hands toward the middle. Every child holds hands with two other children and when everyone is holding hands they attempt to untangle the web while not letting go of anyone’s hands. Another interesting game was a scavenger hunt. The children were separated into a variety of teams and each group was presented with a list of items which they had to find inside a certain time frame. The children learn to work together to solve problems and to communicate in stressful scenarios. The scavenger hunt has a time limit and there are prizes for the team that finished the fastest.
The summer camp he went to also focused quite a bit on ecology and environment. The children did a great deal of outdoor activities like canoeing, swimming, hiking, tying knots and even a little bit of outdoor survival skills. They discovered how to identify a variety of plants and animals, start a fire, construct a shelter and so that forth. They also discovered a great deal about recycling, green energy and so that forth.
My son enjoyed his summer camp so much that we are altering our plans for his spring break from school. We were going to go to Disney World and I even started looking into Disney timeshares for sale so that that we could visit there every year but after having such a wonderful experience at a summer camp he would rather go on a camping or backpacking trip instead. We are now planning on going to Yellowstone National Park. In the springtime the roads are not open to automobiles yet but a lot of the roads are open to nonmotorized recreational vehicles such as bicycles along with roller blades. We are going to go on a bicycle riding/camping trip and it should be loads of fun.
